Overview

What this presentation covers

  • The problem— why accessibility is still overlooked
  • Research — who this platform is for
  • Design decisions — structure and visual language
  • Development — technical choices and implementation
  • Outcomes and reflections
  • Live demo — the website in action

01 — Problem

Accessibility is taught
for experts, not beginners.

Most resources assume prior knowledge. AccessibilityForYoux starts from zero.

01 — Problem

The numbers

96%

of homepage tests fail basic WCAG criteria
(WebAIM Million, 2024)

1.3B

people worldwide live with some form of disability

~0

beginner-friendly, interactive learning platforms on the topic

02 — Research

Understanding
the audience.

Who is a "beginner" in accessibility — and what do they need?

02 — Research

Target audience

Primary

Junior developers & design students

Starting their career, aware accessibility exists but unsure where to begin or why it matters.

Secondary

Self-taught makers & career changers

No formal training background. Learning from online resources. Need practical, approachable guidance.

Key research finding:

Users don't fail to care about accessibility — they fail to start. The barrier is perceived complexity, not motivation.

  • Desk research + existing resource audit
  • User surveys (n = ...)
  • Competitive analysis of existing platforms

03 — Design

Making accessibility
feel approachable.

Visual and content decisions that reduce cognitive load for beginners.

03 — Design

Design principles

Principle 01

Progressive disclosure

Surface only what the user needs at each step. Complexity revealed on demand.

Principle 02

Practice what you preach

The platform itself is fully accessible — it models the behaviour it teaches.

Principle 03

Plain language first

No jargon without explanation. Every term is defined when it first appears.

03 — Design

"The best accessibility resource is the one a beginner actually finishes."

— A guiding principle behind AccessibilityForYoux

04 — Development

Building what
we designed.

Technical stack and implementation decisions.

04 — Development

Tech stack

  • Next.js — framework, routing, SSR
  • TypeScript — type safety across the codebase
  • Tailwind CSS — utility-first styling with accessible defaults
  • GSAP / Framer Motion — accessible animations (respects prefers-reduced-motion)
Accessibility compliance

WCAG 2.1 AA

Every component tested with keyboard navigation, screen readers (NVDA, VoiceOver), and automated axe audits.

05 — Live Demo

accessibilityforyoux.com

06 — Outcomes

What was achieved

  • A fully functional, publicly accessible web platform
  • Content covering ... core accessibility topics
  • WCAG 2.1 AA compliant across all pages

What I'd do differently:

  • User testing — content assumptions shifted late
  • More focus on mobile screen reader behaviour
  • A contribution / community layer for future development
